Why do you think you are turning into this person you are meant to be?

As many of us have realized this week, life on earth is unpredictable and can be taken from us at any time. Our journey here on earth is only temporary to what we will experience eternally with God in heaven.
Think about what you will say to God when he meets you at the gates of heaven. Who else are you looking forward to seeing again and what would you tell them as well?

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." - Robert F. This year has been especially difficult it seems like for a lot of people in the NDCL community, as well as outside of it. Many people have lost loved ones while others are struggling with illnesses, issues at home or damaged relationships. As we come to the end of our senior year we want to enjoy the time we have left but sometimes we do not make the best decisions on how to spend that time.
How will you spend these last months in high school? At home? With your friends? What decisions should you make in order to really live and to be truly happy with the way you spent your time?

We've been talking about relationships and how it is hard to trust other people. Do you think it is going to be easier or harder to find people in college to trust? Do you think the fact that we will be older and more mature in college will help us trust others more?
When thinking of our future, we often scare ourselves when realizing we are leaving home and heading out into the unknown world full of opportunity. But we must remember that whatever happens, there will always be those who will welcome you back with open arms. Although we may look forward to the moment of leaving home, when you come back after college, who expect you will see? And how do you believe your relationship with them will stand after your lengthy absence?

"It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped."
- Anthony Robbins
Ask yourself this: What are you doing with your life? Are you living it or are you just going to some humdrum job that you don't really want to be at, doing some miniscule task, getting paid to be a mindless drone? Or are you out there living life, on your terms, the way you want to live, doing the things you want to do?
So many people in this world are enslaved by society. They may have their own dreams, but they live their lives by what society has told them. Are you living your life in the flow of society? Are living your life based on how society says it should be lived? Or are you truly living your own life, your own desires?
Think deeply about this: Are you enslaved? Are you watching your dreams fly by as you let the routines of society take over your life?
Have you ever thought about this? Have you ever realized this? And have you ever done anything about it?

This journal and our discussion in class on Friday made me think of the quote, "You see, but you do not observe," stated by Sherlock Holmes in "A Scandal in Bohemia". We all see, but there's definitely not enough observing going on. Few people look beyond the surface or analyze their surroundings and situations. When we observe, we think, question, and offer our opinions. When we only see, we take everything at face value and can fall into the routine set by society.

Often times we find ourselves caught up in the dramas and stresses of life. We tend to forget what is really important and put other gods before God, Himself. Write about a time when you have put other "gods" before Him.

Lately we have been worrying about college, while still trying to maintain grades, with sports and deal with other things in life. Well this can equal up to a lot of stress and headaches. Instead of thinking about all of these things I want you to think about what makes you most happy. Whether it is a person, place, something that you like to do that takes your mind off things, or all of this. Focus on this to help you get to the end of the year, and in any other time that you may be feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
Do you believe that happiness is a choice? Are you happy in this present moment? List some people or things that make you truly happy.

For today's journal, I'd like to try something different. Instead of writing your thoughts on a topic that may not interest you, I want to throw you all a curveball. Today I want you to be creative. Draw a picture, write a short story, think of an idea for a movie, or perhaps something else. I feel that our creativity is important and is part of what defines us and makes us stand out. Let those creative juices flow and instead of write, create. Too often are we presented with someone else's ideas and thoughts. Take this time to be you, and truly express yourself and your feelings on anything you wish, in any format that you would like.

For today’s journal, step back from everything that seems so important and think about this:

As I had my eyes opened up to on retreat, I have seen that everyone has a story. But furthermore, what we all learned is that despite our feelings of being alone in each of our respective experiences; we are not. There are so many people that care about each and every one of us, even if you do not know them well. And, God is always there watching over. Take a few minutes to think and then journal about people that are there for you, an instance when someone reached out to you when you needed it the most, or when you realized God was there. Write this journal as a direct message to a specific person, persons, or God.

Love and hate are two of the strongest human emotions. They are the core of all of our other thoughts, feelings and emotions. We often forget just how strong these words are. We hear people say "Oh, I hate him." or "I'm so in love with her." without really realizing how strong these words are. Sometimes we are blinded by our past experiences and let these feelings get in the way of perceiving people the way they truly are.
Think about the people in your life. Think about what they mean to you. Do you love them? Do you hate them? Why? It might be time to reevaluate your opinions of people. We have a little more than 2 months left here at NDCL. Do you really want to graduate hating someone for something they said about you freshman year?

Maybe some quotes are better left unknown:
“The greatest advantage of speaking the truth is that don’t have to remember what you said.”
“Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you”
Reflect on these two quotes. Imagine if you were the person who made it famous.
As you listen to the song, Grouplove talks about “the colors you have”. What colors are feeling now? Why? Now I ask you, do those colors really resemble who you are? Does anyone besides yourself you talk to know your true colors? Express your real colors today.
Because remember: “Why compare yourself with others? No one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you”
Everyone here is unique and can be that way.
As a poet I wrote a poem a long time ago that can be looked at in many different lenses.

We’re alright,

-President Franklin D. Roosevelt
In class recently, we've talked at great lengths about how we relate to others, and how we can tend to lean towards the judgemental side. I'm sure that each of you have observed someone judging another person for their opinions, actions, pastimes, or perceived characters this week, maybe even today. You might have even been the one judging, or the one being judged. That's normal, but status as a norm doesn't necessarily make something right.
Everyone has a story, everyone has their niche, as well as their passions. Just a quick look at what our senior class is doing right now shows uncommon academic persistence, unreal time commitments and fantastic performances in theatre, physically strong, unusually dedicated athletes, and many, many others. All of these "activities," as we plainly call them are our passions, and are very real and significant. Yet we continue to judge others for these passions, along with what they think, do, and say…
-Write, draw, illustrate, or do anything else creative and expressive on paper:
-Think about one of your passions/pastimes, and what it means to you at the moment. How does judgement affect you on a daily basis?
---------------------------------
Know that you are loved and appreciated for what you do, who you are, and what makes you tick. Think about your "thou's," and/or "it's" that ground you in this idea.

Here are just some random thoughts:
Love. What is love? Is it just a feeling? How are we supposed to know if we're in love if people are always telling us we're not? Love is different for every person. Would it be self-sacrifice? As humans, we can only sacrifice so much of ourselves though. After our time, money, and lives, what is there? And this human idea of love often decays. Love can't be temporal like that. So if you are "in love" with someone at one point, how are you to know if you will love them in years to come? Life can't be assumed. Love is confusing because it seems that humanity is incapable of it, yet that's what we live for. No one knows love. Love is the power to surpass time and life. As humans, we are so dependent on these variables that it is questionable if we will ever know true love. Who is to determine if you love someone anyway? That decision is completely up to you. Love could just be a label that humanity puts on something for self satisfaction. Who are we to determine what love is? Why does it even matter? This title of love just causes pain anyway. Regardless if it had a title or not, “love” would still exist because of its power.
Or is time more powerful than love? Love could be limited to human emotion. Time is incomprehensible because it is infinite. Is love infinite? It all comes down to personal opinion. If love is all powerful and infinite then we will never understand it. Time would trump love. These ideas could just be too great and complex for our minds to comprehend. Why even try then? None of it matters.
Reflect if you want.

From getting into and selecting a college/major to teachers not letting us get senioritis and slamming us wth work recently. As we talk about the transition into college and the struggles we face with that transition, we will have to realize that we will face some obstacles to continue our personal growth. Do you feel that you will take the morals and faith within you to college, ultimately growing from the temptations and struggles? Will you strive to be a better person and reflect on your personal growth as you progress through college? Or will you remain complacent in your personal growth and ignore what morals and faith that you have defined in your four years of high school?

Put down your pencil. Close your notebook. Sit back in your desk and relax. The quarter has just ended, and we approach the final stretch of our senior year. With Spring Break just around the corner, we deserve one little break before it comes. Close your eyes and rest. Let no words be spoken during this time and focus on your own thoughts. You don't need them to be put on paper, just keep them to yourselves. Let this be your moment to take a step back and look at everything going on in our lives. We are all preparing for a new chapter in our lives. Many of us are thinking about the ways in which we will conform to college life; opportunities and temptations included. Write about how you plan on avoiding temptations and seizing opportunities you might face in college and how your faith will help mold you into a stronger, more prepared individual.

We have all made friendships here at NDCL and outside of school, and now we may only have a few months left with those people. Do you think you will keep in touch with your "best friends" after graduation? Do you even want to? Are you afraid of loosing them? Take a moment to think about the one thing that has been stressing you out the most. It may be big, it may be small. But try to put it in perspective. Is it worth all the stress it causes you? As we get closer to the summer, we all tend to want to let loose and have 'fun' more and more to relieve stress and somewhat cope with all the burdens that school and homework entail. Write about what bad decisions you can avoid this weekend, and the weekends that follow.

I would like you all to look back at your first journal from this year. Think about how far you've come since then. Have you met your goals for the year? Are your relationships where you would like them to be? We have just over one month left of school. now may be the only time you have to do your best. If you haven't met your goals yet, think about how you can do that in the next five weeks.
1:School ends, summer comes. We almost done high school! What are your plans for the summer?
2:The quality of life is based on one's attitude towards it. I try to handle my presure with a positive and relaxing attitude. What was your mood/attitude in the previous year? Do you feel comfortable with your mood?

As we are approaching the end of the year, stress is building up around us, planning for graduation, getting grades up, and planning for college. To get away from this stress, write about the things that matter in your life.

Our lives as of now are very stressful and buzzing with activity. We are distracted by many things and often lose sight of what truly matters in our lives. Focus on this activity and be true to your thoughts.
Take a deep breath. Close your eyes for just a second and take another deep breath. With your eyes closed, think of a letter, any letter at all. Is it capitalized? How big is it? Open your eyes. Write this letter in your journal exactly how you just saw it. Now, take a quick second to think. What is the FIRST word that comes to mind that starts with this letter? Write that word in your journal vertically so it reads up and down. Take your time and think of a word/name/place for each letter of this word. These should be things that matter deeply to you and what you truly care about in your life. Next, reflect on these words you just wrote and what they mean to you in your life.

“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

We've come so far. Four years gone and passed. Only four years! Yet, look at how much we have changed since those first wee baby steps out of grade school. But, from the angst of teenagehood, the conflicts we've faced, and the sheer bravery each of us has had to find to face them, do we still remember who we once were? Are we different in more ways, or are we similar?
Think now, of a memory. If you believe that mere words cannot do justice to what's in your heart and mind, then feel free to not write, but reflect. Think of a good memory, recent or ancient, in which you felt the heavens truly bless your face. Or, think of a memory in which something changed for you. You didn't know what it was at the time, but, looking back, it's made you who you are today. Or even think of a time when you sat down to watch Spongebob Squarepants with a bag of fritos. Something, anything, man.
Regardless of what you choose (sorry if this one's a little busy by the way) ask yourself at the end: is the world to you as beautiful as you thought it was when you were young(er)? If not, what has it become to you? What have people become to you? What have you become to you?
Focus not on where you're going, but don't start starin at the world through your rear view. Just think for a moment, on where you've been.

We’re a product of our parents. We call them ‘mom’ and ‘dad ’almost like they are masters. Because society places these titles on parents, we are forced to remind ourselves of our connection to them. Every time you use ‘mom’ or ‘dad’ to address them, you’re reminded that they are the ones that gave you life. And you can’t deny that you’re in debt to them; they have been raising you for 18 years. But in the end, aren’t we all just people? It’s easy to conceive a child, but it’s harder to make that child love you for it. I’m not condemning all parent-child relationships, but it’s not fair to pressure the relationship either. We feel guilty when we dishonor our parents. Why? These same concepts can be applied to the parents. Why are they forced to love their children? Is forced love better than indifference? This whole cycle of life involves the family dynamics and “love.” But is it necessarily built on love? Or is family just an obligation that we accept, regardless if love applies?
Is family love authentic or forced because of the obligation? If it’s forced, then couldn’t we love anyone that we spend most of our time with? What are your thoughts on your parents?

It's weird to think that we only have a little over three weeks left of high school. After Commencement, most of us will never talk or see one another until our high school reunion. College will be a new and exciting chapter in each of our lives where we will discover who we truly are. With only three weeks left, is there anything that you need to say before it's too late?

As we near the end of our highschool career, there are a multitude of new opportunities opening up in front of us every day. Our lives are becoming more and more "disenchanted". They are real and there are life changing decisions thrown at us all the time. If you only had one chance to choose one of these real opportunities in front of you today, what would you choose and why? How would this affect you, your future, and others around you?

As our senior year is coming to a close, college is one thing that is on everyone's mind. In a few months the majority of us will move away from home and be on our own. A lot of things will change; friends, relationships, where and how we grew up, and our own personalities. Think about the things that will change the most for you, what will be the hardest change to adapt to, and the things that you will miss the most. Reflect on this.

"Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over."
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Stress is easy to come by in our last few days and weeks here at NDCL. Once we get over the seemingly impassable hill of finals, graduation, etc., though, we will be greeted with a sense of relief, and a fantastic summer spent with friends and family. How will you show vitality through persistence, both while finishing up at NDCL and starting a brand new chapter of your life at college in the fall? How will you find and maintain your peace of mind in the coming weeks and months?
Song: Peace of Mind ~ Boston
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGRrOEbY3pI
“For I do not want any one to read my book carelessly. I have suffered too much grief in setting down these memories. Six years have already passed since my friend went away from me, with his sheep. If I try to describe him here, it is to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not every one has had a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like the grown-ups who are no longer interested in anything but figures."
...
'All men have the stars,' he answered, 'but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You-- you alone-- will have the stars as no one else has them--' 'What are you trying to say?' 'In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night... you-- only you-- will have stars that can laugh!' And he laughed again. 'And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure... and your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky! Then you will say to them, 'Yes, the stars always make me laugh!' And they will think you are crazy. It will be a very shabby trick that I shall have played on you.'
Write sometthing to memorialize someone you miss or will miss. Then, choose whether or not you'd like to show them.
