Today's Highlights
Pope John Paul II states: “the basis for determining the value of human work is not primarily the kind of work done, but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person”.
Work and Meaning
Almost any kind of work can have meaning and be a powerful expression of our creativity. We give meaning to our work, not the other way around. This brief story makes a point.
Three men are breaking rocks. “What are you doing?” a passerby asks. “ Making little rocks out of big ones, “says the 1st worker. “Earning a living,” answers the 2nd. “Building a Cathedral,” says the 3rd.
To each its own meaning. It is not too hard to imagine which of the three workers felt best about what he was doing and found sense of dignity in making little rocks out of big ones. The way we approach and view the work we do plays a key role in whether we feel our work has meaning.
