WHAT’S ON THE MINDS OF AMERICA’S YOUTH?
More than 40 years ago, young people across the country staged sit-ins for civil rights and got up and protested against the Vietnam War. Around the world, youth stood in open rebellion against governments that failed to provide for and protect basic rights. Although a lot has changed since then, there are still racial and economic divides, America is once again involved in wars on the other side of the world, and the world continues to see violence and oppression. Back in the 1960s and 70s, a similar climate motivated great numbers of young people to act, organize, and take to the streets in defiance. Today it seems as if younger Americans are content to watch their reality shows, fiddle with their iPhones, follow the love lives and exploits of celebrities, and assume the hard work is being done for them by others. What has changed? Is it simply that we do not have motivating factors such as a military draft or Kent State (a student protest in 1970 in which four student protesters were killed by the National Guard) to bring us together, to anger us? Where are the young people today? What is going on inside the minds of America’s youth?
