Journal: Are there things about you as a person that make you feel that you are different from other people? Describe them and describe how having these qualities makes you feel --and has affected you over time.
Song: Buffalo Springfield- Stop Children There's something happening here What it is ain't exactly clear There's a man with a gun over there Telling me i got to beware I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down There's battle lines being drawn Nobody's right if everybody's wrong Young people speaking their minds Getting so much resistance from behind I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down What a field-day for the heat A thousand people in the street Singing songs and carrying signs Mostly say, hooray for our side It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you're always afraid You step out of line, the man come and take you away We better stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, hey, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, now, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down Stop, children, what's that sound Everybody look what's going down WHAT’S ON THE MINDS OF AMERICA’S YOUTH?
More than 40 years ago, young people across the country staged sit-ins for civil rights and got up and protested against the Vietnam War. Around the world, youth stood in open rebellion against governments that failed to provide for and protect basic rights. Although a lot has changed since then, there are still racial and economic divides, America is once again involved in wars on the other side of the world, and the world continues to see violence and oppression. Back in the 1960s and 70s, a similar climate motivated great numbers of young people to act, organize, and take to the streets in defiance. Today it seems as if younger Americans are content to watch their reality shows, fiddle with their iPhones, follow the love lives and exploits of celebrities, and assume the hard work is being done for them by others. What has changed? Is it simply that we do not have motivating factors such as a military draft or Kent State (a student protest in 1970 in which four student protesters were killed by the National Guard) to bring us together, to anger us? Where are the young people today? What is going on inside the minds of America’s youth? Song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOufqWodFNo Name a time when you discriminated someone. How did it make you feel afterwards. Reflect on what it feels like being discriminated.
In your perspective, what is/are the root(s) of the problem(s) of the world?
What are a few things that were daunting from our previous discussion on dualism; truth? defining good and eveil? Could you define what dualism is, and the role that marketing managers play in twisting subliminal messages to consumers.
AN INSTANCE OF BROTHER JUNIPER'S
GREAT POWER AGAINST THE DEVIL The devils could not endure the purity of Brother Juniper's innocence and his profound humility, as appears in the following example: A certain demoniac one day fled in an unaccustomed manner, and through devious paths, seven miles from his home. When his parents, who had followed him in great distress of mind, at last overtook him, they asked him why he had fled in this strange way. The demoniac answered: "Because that fool Juniper was coming this way. I could not endure his presence, and therefore, rather than wait his coming, I fled away through these woods." And on inquiring into the truth of these words, they found that Brother Juniper had indeed arrived at the time the devil had said. Therefore when demoniacs were brought to St Francis to be healed, if the evil spirit did not immediately depart at his command, hewas wont to say: "Unless thou dost instantly leave this creature, I will bring Brother Juniper to thee." Then the devil, fearing the presence of Brother Juniper, and being unable to endure the virtue and humility of St Francis, would forthwith depart. What power of innocence and strength can you learn from the life of this simple man? The Old Sailor
The priest said that was no way for a man to talk to God when he was dying and that the old sailor had better hurry up and be sorry for his sins if he didn't want to go to hell and lose Almighty God for ever and ever; but the old sailor said that while he was sorry for having missed the Sacraments so often and for not having loved God more, he wasn't sorry for having known all those women, because they had all been so beautiful and some of them very kind as well. In his despair Father Smith asked the old sailor if he was sorry for not being sorry for having known all those women and the old sailor said that yes, he was sorry for not being sorry and he hoped that God would understand. Whereupon Father Smith said that he thought that perhaps God would understand. . Journal: When is the last time that you were truly sorry for your sins? Elaborate on the courage it takes to repent for past mistakes. Lesson: Sorry for being out, ---again. Can't control this. I was the guest speaker for the sisters at the health care facility yesterday. They were very taken back by what we want to do with them. On Thursday, I will take you up the hill. Today, we are going to watch the Green Mile. You will receive a packet of notes about the film. This film is filled with great depth of the Catholic Social Teaching. I will elaborate more about all of them next class. In the meantime, watch the film from the perspective of identifying the CST's. God Bless. God’s Breath
This story is rich with images of Baptism. The cave seems to be a wet tomb embracing the boys in the story. A light goes out, yet it is a light that guides the boys out again. When they emerge, they are changed, more mature young men. As the title itself suggests, there is also much imagery of the Holy Spirit. In the midst of the boys’ fear, God’s breath offers comfort. Journal Questions What did Sammy describe as God’s breath, and how do you define "God's Breath" in your life? How did Sammy’s image of God change throughout the story?
